Welcome...

and please watch for our new location starting December 1, 2009 . The workshop will be moving to a new studio at the Bedford Avenue stop on the L train. Check out directions on the "location" side bar of this site. See you soon!

My name is Paula Spiro

and I teach drum kit

to adults of all ages,

teens and children.

The purpose of this site is to especially encourage girls and women to drum. I have been teaching and performing in New York City for more than twenty-five years and have been featured in Modern Drummer Magazine and am a former Manhattan music school director.

Students play for fun and recreation or set your goals to become a professional musician. Rock is the focus, though a solid foundation in all drumming styles is available.

Beginners are encouraged in a supportive environment. Learn the basics of drum kit playing ie., how to purchase materials to get started, how to grip and bounce the sticks, reading and writing of notes (rhythmic notation), playing with a metronome to improve your time keeping, intro to today's beats and fills and yesterday's influences, basic rudiment studies starting with single and double strokes, and how to play with other beginning musicians within the first year.

Intermediate drummers who are currently playing often need help with technique. Improve your groove, time-keeping, and traveling around the kit. I have had the opportunity to share the  traditions of The Moeller System of hand and foot development for endurance and playing fast strokes without tension in the limbs. Learn new beats and fills (past and present) from your band influences and benefit from a collection of lesson literature by the drumming greats.

Further your reading and writing of rhythmic notation so that you can know the language of drums and study on your own. Learn how the rudiments apply to what you are already playing and how they can help in creating exciting fills and grooves.

Advanced players take your playing up one more notch by discussing with me the keypoint areas in which you would like to focus on.

2 drum kits in the studio. Located on the L subway line; 1 stop from Manhattan in the artist district of Williamsburg at the Bedford Avenue stop. Call or write and let me know how I can assist you in your drumming. 646-427-5595 or 718-840-0434.
